DESCRIPTION

The ability of Fox Blocks walls to provide an effective shield against weather related disasters was a key element of this 101,000 square foot school. “School safety and security for their children is number one” stated Mr. Randall McAlexander, Project Architect with Rufus Johnson & Associates. “The timing of this project proved significant due to the timing of recent storms in Joplin, Missouri, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Moore, Oklahoma.”

While there were several varying roof heights and top of wall heights, the ICF system provided flexibility during execution to move the project forward swiftly and accurately despite challenges due to the school being 30 feet below street grade.

A 40% reduction in HVAC equipment sizing was due in part from the thermal performance of the ICF envelope walls, the increased insulation in the roof decking, the reduction of ventilation runs and installation of large efficient air-moving fans through all main corridors and hallways.

This design is now the new prototype for upcoming future Clarksville-Montgomery County elementary school replacements/additions and as needed for increased school population.
