SAUGEEN POLICE HQ
The forward-thinking police department in Saugeen Shores wanted a bullet-proof, state-of-the-art station. The design was developed with expansion in mind so the headquarters can grow with the neighborhoods that the department serves. The new police station includes a community service room, office for victim services, probation and parole spaces, controlled access parking for police vehicles, a safe goods and exchange area available 24 hours, front entrance after-hours panic room with direct line to dispatch, training facilities, interview rooms, workout facilities, and a huge secure storage area and courtyard area.
This community-building concept was showcased in a truly modern design featuring 23‘-tall angled and curved walls, and a 34’ tower. No two walls are alike. Extreme weather conditions made this build a complex balancing act. Being both bulletproof and high performing in its strength, Fox Blocks ICF met every challenge. To create the curved walls the builders opted for the simplest method – bending the ICF, running lath stripping, then bracing. The builders were able to run rebar continuously from the footings to the parapet, which eliminated the need for a separately designed steel or wood parapet. The envelope was designed so that the ICF construction could be completed in full in the first round of construction before the other trades started on site.
The first snow of the season fell in the midst of the Fox Blocks installation and continued throughout the construction with whiteouts, strong hurricane-like winds, and lake effect snow.
