This build­ing is one of the first to offer afford­able hous­ing for both adults on the autism spec­trum and for those who are not on the spec­trum.

After los­ing their home to a fire in 2017, the project own­ers aimed to build a replace­ment that was sim­i­lar in design but stronger and more fire-resis­tant. The fire had exten­sive­ly dam­aged the site, which neces­si­tat­ed a com­plete demo­li­tion of the old struc­ture, includ­ing the for­mer base­ment, pri­or to the con­struc­tion of the new ICF home.

Fox Blocks has been mak­ing insu­lat­ed con­crete forms since 2005. Our par­ent com­pa­ny, Air­lite Plas­tics, was found­ed in 1946, and today, it is still a fam­i­ly owned busi­ness. Air­lite pro­duces plas­tic con­tain­ers and insu­lat­ed pack­ag­ing prod­ucts for a vari­ety of indus­tries, so we share knowl­edge of plas­tics inno­va­tion through­out the com­pa­ny.

The home­own­er want­ed to build a mul­ti­fam­i­ly high-per­for­mance home as part of the Detroit Revi­tal­iza­tion Pro­gram, an ini­tia­tive in the region that aims to sus­tain and grow neigh­bor­hoods.

This unique air hangar is the first of its kind in terms of ICF appli­ca­tions. The design of this build­ing was not intend­ed to stand out, but to con­form and fit its envi­ron­ment. With beau­ti­ful wood and stonework exte­ri­or fin­ish­es and the steep rake of the roof down to the embank­ment in which the hangar is nes­tled, the build­ing ele­gant­ly blends into the beau­ti­ful Ida­ho sur­round­ings with­out being obtru­sive.
